Our research verdict
Classic Weighted Vest X (fixed)
Based on maker specs and independent reviews, the Classic fixed-weight Zelus vest is a reasonable budget pick for light walking loads of about 12 lb or less, the weight OutdoorGearLab tested. It is a weaker choice if you want to add weight over time, run in the vest, or count on published warranty terms and low-cost returns.

What reviewers criticize

Zelus sells low-cost weighted vests, and its Classic fixed-weight vest is a frequent budget pick in roundups. Reviewers like the price and fit for light walking loads; caveats are fixed weight, some bounce when running, a chemical smell on arrival and thin warranty and return terms. Zelus’s adjustable and slim models have no independent reviews yet. This is a research review.
Zelus weighted vests at a glance
Specs and price bands are from Zelus’s pages for the Classic fixed vest, Classic Adjustable, Z-Fit Slim Adjustable and its care page, as seen on October 9, 2026. Prices vary by weight, so each model spans more than one band.
| Model | Weight | Adjustable? | Fill | Care | Price band | Independent reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Weighted Vest, X-shaped (fixed) | 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 25 or 30 lb | No | Iron sand | Wipe clean only | $–$$ at Zelus; lower on Amazon per roundups | OutdoorGearLab (tested), GGR, NBC Select, BestReviews, Women’s Health, Consumer Reports (paywalled) |
| Classic Adjustable, X-shaped | 4–10, 11–20 or 20–32 lb versions | Yes, iron-sand bags | Iron sand | Wipe clean only | $–$$ | None found |
| Z-Fit Slim Adjustable | 8–14, 9–15, 11–20 or 20–32 lb versions | Yes, removable blocks | Silicone and fine iron powder | Wipe clean; hand soak with blocks removed | $$ | None found |
| Other current models | 1.1–60 lb across models | Varies | Iron sand, Z-Fit soft iron or solid iron blocks | Varies; Slim Flex models machine wash with weights out | $ to above $$$ | Kit Authority (Slim Flex, not tested) |
The other current models are the U-shaped fixed and U-shaped adjustable vests tagged “Women’s fit,” the Z-Fit Slim fixed (5–15 lb), the Z-Fit Slim Flex (10 or 15 lb, sizes M/L), the Z-Fit Slim Flex Adjustable (up to 40 lb with 16 blocks), and the Y-shaped Classic Adjustable and Performance vests.
Is the Zelus weighted vest good?
For the Classic fixed-weight vest, reviewers say yes as a budget option for light walking loads of about 12 lb or less. For the adjustable and slim models, there is not enough independent evidence to judge.
It is the budget or beginner pick at OutdoorGearLab (hands-on, 72/100), Garage Gym Reviews, NBC Select and BestReviews. Their caveats:
- Fixed weight. You cannot add or remove load, and OutdoorGearLab found the straps only slightly adjustable.
- Bounce when running. OutdoorGearLab reports the weight jostles on runs; Women’s Health disagrees (see below).
- Odor on arrival. BestReviews reports a chemical smell and suggests airing the vest out for several days.
- Thin after-sales terms. The warranty appears only on Zelus’s homepage, preference returns carry a 25% restocking fee, and Amazon orders get no Zelus support.
Zelus’s Classic Adjustable and Z-Fit Slim Adjustable have no independent expert review, hands-on or otherwise. What is known comes from Zelus’s pages and a few owner reviews.
What reviewers say
Reviewers find the Classic fixed vest comfortable and good value at light loads but disagree on bounce and fabric. Unless noted, each review covers that vest, usually its Amazon listing.
OutdoorGearLab (tested, bought). The December 2025 roundup names Zelus a “Best Buy” at 72/100, with sub-scores of 7 for performance, 8 for comfort, 6 for features and 8 for ease of use. Testers used the 12 lb version and liked the padding, easy on and off and range of motion. Cons: fixed weight and little strap adjustment. They note it “bounces slightly while running, it’s not uncomfortable,” would not go much heavier than 12 lb, and call Zelus and Henkelion almost identical.
Garage Gym Reviews. The roundup, reviewed in December 2025, names the “Zelus Weighted Vest” on Amazon its Best Budget Weighted Vest. It does not name the variant, and the tester is unnamed, so hands-on use is implied but not stated. A tester notes, “Even the 30-pound model doesn’t dig in at the shoulders.” GGR’s Zelus product page describes a 6–30 lb fixed vest and lists cons: weight that cannot be adjusted, one size that may not fit all frames, and a “Limited 1-year warranty.” Because that page covers the fixed vest, the Best Budget pick most likely refers to it too; we could not verify this.
NBC Select (not tested). The June 2026 roundup names Zelus best for beginners, based on expert guidance and retailer ratings. Pros: padding, detachable pockets and reflective details. Con: the weight is not adjustable.
BestReviews (research-based). The September 2026 roundup calls it “a cheap yet reliable weighted vest” and names it Best Bang for the Buck. Its cons, drawn from customer feedback, are a chemical odor on arrival and a fit that can be too tight or too loose on some frames.
Women’s Health (2024, says it tested). An older, undated Women’s Health roundup syndicated on AOL does not name the model and lists no cons. It says the vest “doesn’t bounce throughout movement and sits in place.” That conflicts with OutdoorGearLab’s slight bounce on runs.
Fox News Deals (not tested). A December 2025 deals roundup calls it “great for anyone easing into weighted workouts.”
Consumer Reports (paywalled). Consumer Reports lists a Zelus Weighted Vest among the vests it tested, but we could not verify the model, rating or verdict.
Kit Authority (not tested). Kit Authority’s women’s roundup, labeled “researched, not hands-on tested,” rates a Zelus women’s 1–15 lb vest 7.2/10, the lowest of its four picks. That vest matches the Z-Fit Slim Flex, not the Z-Fit Slim Adjustable. Kit Authority says “the cut is slim enough to wear under a hoodie” and notes it has lately cost more than the Hyperwear FIT.
Fabric conflict. Zelus describes the Classic fixed vest’s shell as “soft, wear-resistant spandex.” GGR’s product page calls it Lycra, NBC Select calls it neoprene, Women’s Health calls it chloroprene rubber (another name for neoprene), and BestReviews mentions spandex, Lycra/SBR and neoprene in different sections. We could not verify which is correct.
Pocket conflict. Zelus lists an armband pouch, a rear mesh pocket and reflective strips. NBC Select instead describes two detachable zipper pockets, which may reflect the Amazon version; we could not verify this.
No reviewer reports sand leaking or chafing, though absence of reports is not proof.
What owners say
Owner ratings on Zelus’s own store are high but based on small samples, and Amazon ratings could not be checked.
As of October 9, 2026, Zelus’s store showed:
- Classic Adjustable X: 4.6 out of 5 from 28 reviews. Owners call it comfortable and easy to adjust but say it runs small, and one says it is tricky to get on and off.
- Classic fixed X: 4.8 out of 5 from 17 reviews. Owners mention soft shoulders and use for walking or jogging; one reports missing clips.
- Z-Fit Slim Adjustable: 5.0 out of 5 from 9 reviews. Owners praise how thin it is for an adjustable vest and its build quality.
On Walmart, one listing titled “ZELUS Weighted Vest” (6–30 lb) showed 5 out of 5 from 2 ratings, no written reviews, a “Not Available” status and the brand field “RibRave,” so it is likely a third-party listing; we could not verify the seller. We found no Zelus listing at Target. Amazon blocked our checks, so we could not collect its ratings or review counts.
Zelus adjustable vs fixed: which to buy?
Buy the fixed vest only if you can pick the right weight now; the adjustable versions let you change load but have unclear bag setups and showed pre-order notices.
Classic Adjustable X. Zelus sells it in 4–10, 11–20 and 20–32 lb versions. Its description says the vest goes from 11 to 20 lb with six included 1.5 lb iron-sand bags. Six 1.5 lb bags add 9 lb, which fits the 11–20 lb version only. It cannot explain the 6 lb span of the 4–10 lb version or the 12 lb span of the 20–32 lb version, and we could not verify the bag count or size for those two. The page gives no chest range.
Z-Fit Slim Adjustable. Zelus describes its weight blocks as “a seamless blend of silicone and fine iron powder” and markets them as sand-free and rattle-free. Zelus does not state the block count or size. Owners of the 9–15 lb version report six blocks of about 1 lb each, but one weighed a block at 15.3 oz; we could not verify either figure. The page tells buyers to use the right chest range but shows no size chart. A Zelus press release positions the design as women-first and claims about 40% lower peak contact pressure; that is a maker claim.
Availability. On October 9, 2026, both adjustable pages showed a notice reading “Pre-order this item now! It’s coming soon.” next to an active Add to Cart button. The Classic Adjustable has been listed since May 2025, so the notice may mean it is backordered rather than unreleased; we could not verify this.
Classic fixed X. You pick one of seven weights at checkout, and the weight cannot change later. Straps fit chests from 35 to 45 inches. Our house guidance is to start at about 5% of body weight, or 3% if you are 65 or older or new to vests; see how heavy a weighted vest should be.
Warranty, returns and where to buy
Zelus advertises a 1-year warranty but does not publish its terms, and preference returns cost a 25% restocking fee.
Warranty. The 1-year warranty appears only in a trust block on Zelus’s homepage, which says products are “protected for a full year.” No Zelus product page states a warranty, and the refund policy does not mention one. GGR lists a limited 1-year warranty for the fixed vest. Zelus’s terms of service disclaim that products “will meet your expectations.”
Returns. Zelus’s refund policy allows returns within 30 days of receipt for items that are unworn and unused, with tags and original packaging. For preference or fit returns, you pay return shipping plus a 25% restocking fee. Zelus pays for defects, transit damage and its own errors.
Where to buy. Orders from Amazon, TikTok Shop or eBay are excluded from Zelus’s after-sales support, so check that seller’s return policy before you buy. Roundups quote Amazon prices well below Zelus’s store prices, each for an unnamed weight, and we could not check Amazon ourselves. For more on retailers, see where to buy weighted vests.
How to clean a Zelus vest
Wipe the Classic vests clean and never machine wash or soak them; the Z-Fit Slim Adjustable can also be hand soaked with the blocks removed.
- Classic fixed and Classic Adjustable. Zelus’s care page lists them as wipe clean only: “Never soak or submerge the vest, and never put it in a washing machine.” It recommends disinfectant spray for odor and air drying only.
- Z-Fit Slim Adjustable. The care page lists wipe clean plus hand soak, and says not to wring or twist. Zelus’s product copy conflicts: it tells buyers to wash the entire vest, while the same page’s FAQ says machine washing is not recommended and to hand wash or soak with the blocks removed. Follow the care page.
- Slim Flex and Y-shaped models. The care page lists these as machine washable with the weights removed.
For general steps, see how to clean a weighted vest.
About Zelus
Zelus says it began in 2016 as a home fitness brand; its headquarters and manufacturing country are unconfirmed.
- History and scale. Zelus’s about page says the brand now focuses on weighted vests and claims “Over 6 million orders since 2016” across all channels. That is a maker claim.
- Location. The about page names no headquarters and does not say where the vests are made. A 2025 PR Newswire release is datelined Anaheim, California, and calls Zelus “the market leader in weighted training solutions,” a maker claim. The later Y-shape release lists a media contact in Lake Forest, California. Zelus is best described as a US-marketed brand whose press releases list California contacts.
- Technology claims. The 2025 release describes “patented Z-Fit technology” made by one-piece injection molding. We could not verify the patent, the legal entity or the manufacturing country.

More questions
What is inside Zelus weights?
It depends on the model. Per Zelus's product pages, the Classic fixed vest is filled with iron sand, the Classic Adjustable uses removable iron-sand bags, and the Z-Fit Slim Adjustable uses blocks Zelus describes as a blend of silicone and fine iron powder. Zelus's Performance Y-shaped vests use solid iron blocks.
Can you run in a Zelus vest?
OutdoorGearLab, which tested the Classic fixed vest at 12 lb, reports that it bounces slightly when running, while a 2024 Women's Health review says it does not bounce. Our site does not recommend running with a weighted vest by default; see our guide to running with a weighted vest.
Is Zelus available at Walmart or Amazon?
Most roundups link to Amazon listings, but Amazon blocked our checks, so we could not verify its prices or ratings. Zelus's refund policy excludes Amazon, TikTok Shop and eBay orders from its after-sales support. The one Walmart listing we found was marked not available and appears to come from a third-party seller.
